Welcome to Perimenopause with Purpose and Ease. Are you as excited about this topic as I am? Today I'm going to give you a four step process to free yourself from Hormone Hill and flourish through perimenopause and menopause. I'm gonna give you a roadmap to radiant health, confidence, clarity, and self-actualization through harnessing your feminine power and sexual energy and hormonal health in a way that can only be done in your forties and beyond.
So sorry, ladies in your twenties and thirties. This is just for the forties and beyond crew. First of all, I would love to introduce myself if you don't already know me. I'm Sarah tefl, integrative health practitioner. I'm a board certified Ayurvedic health counselor, master certified nutrition coach. And.

That much. You might be seeing more about hormones in perimenopause online. It's definitely out there these days, but often it's presented in a really confusing [00:03:00] foreboding, like this is gonna be total hell or a very disempowering way. So you're here because you want real, effective, empowered options, and you want holistic options that encompass your mind, body, and spirit.
Even though these hormones are powerful, you know that you are not just a, a group of lab test readouts on a piece of paper. You're not just a bunch of chemicals. You're so much more, and so we need to treat this period of life. Like it's so much more like. The opportunity that it is. So that's what we are gonna do today.
And first, I just wanna let you know that you are not broken. That I see these symptoms and issues all the time in clients and that your issues are solvable. So how are we gonna do it? I wanna tell you about our game plan today, and then we will launch into it. Today's hormone game plan. First, we're gonna talk about the hormone vicious cycle that you might feel caught in.
Right now [00:04:00] we are gonna dive into the standard medical route that is being recommended to you. That is not. Working at all. We're going to reveal the two real underlying issues, what's driving your symptoms and how to really solve them. We're gonna talk about the hormone cascade, body reconnection, and bliss hormones.
Very yummy topic that you're gonna love. One of my favorite current topics, four steps to help you naturally rebalance. So are you ready? Let's go. And I want you to know that even though we're talking about holistic hormones and more natural solutions, this is completely doable and appropriate for you.
Even if you're on HRT Hormone replacement therapy, even synthetic HRT or even if you've had a hysterectomy, there is so much here for you. So stick with it and let's do this. First off, here is the hormone [00:05:00] vicious cycle that so many of us are stuck in. We wanna feel amazing in our forties and fifties and beyond.
We wanna have balanced hormones, a healthy body, great energy, we wanna enjoy our life, but our reality right now is hormone hell. All of the symptoms that I listed earlier. Or maybe you have a cluster of three or four main symptoms that are really interfering with your quality of life, because yes, it can be that severe.
So what happens in this situation? We assume that our hormones in our body are out of whack and we go to our doctor to fix it, right? Because we think that it's caused by imbalanced estrogen and progesterone, or maybe it's just bad genes. So there's more of kind of that I'm doomed thinking. Um, 'cause that, that's basically what we're told women in our forties.
It's all just gonna be downhill from here, right? So when we do this, when we have this thinking that I'm just out of whack and I gotta fix [00:06:00] it, what we're doing accidentally is we're ignoring our body's messages and we're often skipping right to medication and never addressing the underlying causes. But that's what we're gonna fix today.
More on the standard medical route. That does not work. By the way, what do most of us do when we're starting to feel these hot flashes, this weight gain? We think, all right, I'm fed up with this. Something's wrong. I'm gonna finally go to my doctor and look into this. I'm gonna get some answers. You know, we're really resolved to finally address this.
So what's the standard medical route that we take usually? First we go to our PCP, our primary care physician for a serum blood test. And first off, that's not actually the preferred way to test hormones. It's not the most comprehensive or the most accurate way to test hormones. So right there we're starting at a disadvantage.
And then maybe we go to our GI doctor 'cause we're also having gut issues and maybe we also go to [00:07:00] a psychiatrist for our mental health symptoms. And lo and behold, what all of these western medical practitioners do, this the standard medical route. Your PCP or maybe even a hormone specialist prescribes synthetic hormone replacement.
These are chemically manufactured hormones that are not similar to our body's own hormones. So often there are lots of side effects, but again, if you're already on HRT, there are ways that we can help and boost the efficacy. Figure out the underlying causes, so stick with it. Our psychiatrist will give us anxiety meds or SSRIs, and most GI doctors actually don't help at all beyond telling you you need a colonoscopy and an endoscopy and then saying everything looks fine.
So we just get all these medications and then our issues compound or worsen. Sometimes we experience a slight. Decrease in symptoms, but it's usually short-lived. And then it's usually followed by an increase in other [00:08:00] symptoms that are side effects or that are effects of other hormones, not estrogen and progesterone that are at work.
And that's what we're gonna talk about when we talk about the hormone cascade. It's truly amazing. So if your issues compound or worsen over the years, your doctor's gonna probably eventually recommend a partial or full hysterectomy, which is an irreversible procedure with many unwanted postoperative side effects and risks.
Things like pelvic organ prolapse, your libido completely disappears. Your relationships and confidence suffer. You struggle through your days. You don't enjoy your life. You have increasing issues with every decade. This is exhausting, and don't worry, we are gonna get to the solutions soon. I know that this is all very heavy and that's how you're feeling now and you're here for solutions, so we are going to get to those.
The result of this standard medical route is dependent on a healthcare system that is not [00:09:00] working. Other results are total disconnection from our bodies, disconnection from our purpose, from our inner wisdom, a loss of our true selves. We're merely surviving perimenopause and menopause, and then we're struggling through our forties and fifties, and that creates compounding health issues into our sixties and seventies.
Before we start with the solutions, I wanna illustrate the why, because this is all so frustrating, right? It is so frustrating, it's so disempowering. Why are we even in the situation where we're not getting any real solutions beyond pills and surgeries? So there are four main things at work here. One is sexism.
Male doctors and male legislators don't understand women, they don't understand our needs. All the stresses we hold, they don't understand our bodies, our souls, our sexuality, our deep power. You know what makes women the holistic. [00:10:00] Woman, mind, body, and spirit. Many of the males who are making big decisions do not understand this at all.
This is why I always recommend that women work with other women practitioners a hundred percent. So number two is the inadequacy of the healthcare system. 14 to 24 minutes with your PCP is not enough. That's the average time that people spend with their primary care physician. And there are all sorts of reasons for this, but it's simply not enough, and that's why we need to take our health into our own hands, and that is what you're here to do.
Also, a lack of education. We're never taught how our hormones work, but it's not. Your fault. And then number four is capitalism. Big pharmaceutical companies, there is lots of money to be made from pharmaceutical sales. The hard truth, ladies, is that no one makes money from our self-actualization, from us becoming our most fulfilled, powerful selves.
There's not a lot of money in that. So that's really not the agenda that's [00:11:00] pushed. And many men are actually afraid of women who are confident and inhabiting their true power. But this is your life. This is your body, and this is your power, and we are here to reclaim it. So what is possible for women? Not just surviving perimenopause, but flourishing, blossoming, self-actualizing through your forties, fifties, and beyond.
And when I say self-actualization, what that means is you at your highest level of love, happiness, contentment, and satisfaction. We can enter our second half of life with clarity, confidence, radiance, and purpose. We can be turned on by our lives, our bodies, by ourselves. We can be on fire, and that is what I'm gonna teach you.
So how it's done, how's this done? It sounds amazing. How do we do [00:12:00] it? Sign me up. So first we have to understand and address the two real underlying issues. The hormone cascade and body disconnection. The hormone cascade will illuminate. How your hormones actually work, and we were not taught this in school.
Furthermore, many doctors don't fully grasp this or they do, but they simply don't take the time to explain it to patients because it is quicker to just medicate with HRT or another medication. This is why it keeps getting worse. Your hormonal issues, your mental health issues, your body and digestive issues.
This is why it keeps getting worse and why HRT or hormone replacement therapy alone will not solve it. I'm air quoting Solve it. We're gonna talk about how we've been doing it all wrong, and what you can do to take your health, body, and future into your own hands. First, let me tell you about the hormone cascade.[00:13:00]
The hormone cascade refers to the order in which your body produces and utilizes hormones. Which hormones directly affect and create other hormones. This is akin to a stream, a river, or a waterfall. Just think of any body of water that's really flowing. And so with the hormone cascade, the upstream affects the downstream.
And I like to think of a waterfall or a cascade where what's happening up at the top of the waterfall, how it's flowing down, affects what's in the little lagoon beneath, right? Like how could it not? It's flowing directly into it. So I'm gonna teach you about the upstream and the downstream hormones, and this is gonna become really clear.
So upstream hormones are our hormones in our body that actually create. Healthy, sufficient downstream hormones, just like that waterfall that I just described. These upstream hormones make [00:14:00] our bodies function on every level. So some examples of upstream hormones are stress hormones, which are also known as energy hormones.
When we think of stress hormones, especially with what we see on social media and online, often stress hormones are vilified, right? Cortisol's, the reason for your belly weight gain. It's the reason why your body's inflamed. But cortisol, cortisone, and all the other glucocorticoids, those are the scientific name for your stress hormones.
They're actually energy hormones as well, but we want to be producing them in a sufficient amount and utilizing them, metabolizing them at the right times of day. Otherwise, we're gonna talk about this. Those are gonna cause some issues with the downstream hormones, and this is exactly what's happening in our bodies.
So stress hormones, also energy hormones, sleep hormones. Melatonin and other powerful sleep hormones. Other examples of downstream hormones are appetite and satiety hormones. These are hormones like leptin and [00:15:00] ghrelin, and they help control sugar cravings. They help you moderate how much you eat and be satisfied after eating.
They help you reach an ideal weight naturally when they're IMB balance. And then we've got the bliss hormones, and these are neurotransmitters like dopamine, oxytocin, and other of these yummy feel good neurotransmitters. And neurotransmitters is just another name for hormones. So these upstream hormones are very, very important.
They create the healthy downstream hormones. The downstream hormones, so this is at the bottom of the waterfall. What's created are our sex hormones. These are the ones that we're overemphasizing in our standard medical route that we're taking the estrogen, the progesterone, and the testosterone. Very important.
And downstream hormones. These are after effects or byproducts of our upstream hormones. AKA, the last stop on the train [00:16:00] route. If I think of a train or bus route, and I think of these sex hormones as the last stop. What's happened before at every preceding stop is affecting that last stop. Who's on the bus at the last stop?
Most doctors start with these downstream hormones, and this is an error. So when you understand the hormone cascade and how it works, and I've just given you a really in a nutshell version, but hopefully your brain is already starting to see this in a different way, and you're starting to have some light bulb moments of, gosh, no wonder those synthetic hormones or going back on the birth control pill didn't address all my issues.
We were just addressing the downstream hormones. So we've been focusing on the wrong hormones. Focusing on downstream hormones is like. Trying to adjust your bath water temperature. Say you've got a scalding hot bath, there's scalding hot water just [00:17:00] pouring outta the faucet, and you just keep running to the kitchen and getting big buckets of ice and dumping into the scalding hot bath water, trying to create that nice middle ground temperature.
Instead of just adjusting the temperature on the faucet, it's ridiculous, right? It's completely ridiculous. It's also akin to chasing our tails, so it's a tremendous waste of our energy. It's a waste of time, energy, money. It's the system that doesn't work, and yet we still keep doing it. So it doesn't work long term.
It's not a solution. But what is the real solution? The radical option that we've never been given is healing naturally by addressing our upstream hormones. And instead of furthering this disconnection with our body, we're gonna reconnect with our body with four simple steps to hormone healing. We're gonna fall in love with our body and life again.
